Hunters Break State Record with Monster Gator

Maybe it is just me, but it seems like alligator hunting has grown in popularity over the last few years. What is not to like about it? How often do you get to wrestle with a giant lizard? It is the modern day equivalent of slaying dragons, and man did a few Arkansas boy slay a big one.

According to KATV, Travis Bearden, his father, brother, and best friend were hunting gators in Lake Merrisach when they were able to harvest a monster gator that measured  13 feet, 11.5 inches. This beats the former record 13 feet, 10 inches.

However, the old record while only being an inch and a half shorter out weighted the new length record by over 500 pounds. Bearden’s gator weighed in at around 800 while the former tipped the scales at 1,380 pounds.

Gators are growing faster than ever, a study done in the Mississippi River showed that gators in that ecosystem are growing at 5X time rate of gators in other ecosystems, because of the Asian carp adding a huge food source to the river.
