Flordia is doubling down on its efforts to control the numbers of invasive pythons. They already have teams of hunters that have literally racked up miles worth of snakes, and the National Park Service is even going to allow shotgun hunters in the park to shoot the snake.
Now Florida Fish & Wildlife just unveiled the new Python Pickup Program. Where every python you remove from the ecosystem gives you an entry into a Grand Prize drawing that will be held October of 2020. Plus everyone who submits a python receives a t-shirt.
The FWC’s Python Pickup Program is an incentive program designed to encourage the public to humanely kill Burmese pythons from the Everglades ecosystem and report locations to the FWC. People who submit proof of python with the location of removal will be entered into a grand prize drawing that will take place in October 2020.
You can submit pythons to the Python Pickup Program that have been killed from any property in Florida where you have the authorization to do so from the land manager or land managing agency.
Basically, if you have permission to hunt on a piece of property you can enter the kill. It does not matter if it is public or private ground they all count.
It’s easy to submit proof that you have removed and killed a python. Simply send an email to Pythons@MyFWC.com. Type “Python Pickup” in the subject line and include the following in your email:
- A photo* that shows the snake has been killed and can be identified as a Burmese python
- The date the python was captured and killed
- The location where the python was captured (GPS coordinates are preferred)
- Your name, phone number, home or mailing address, and (for first submission only) your t-shirt size
As of right now, the Grand Prize has not been determined, but as soon as we hear something we will let you know.
If you are interested in participating here are the official rules.
