Man Arrested for Setting a Live Deer on Fire

Last month we reported about a deer that was hit by a car and then set on fire. CLICK HERE to read original post. Today we learned that there has been a huge development in the investigation. Two men have been identified and one has already been arrested.

According to WTHR Channel 19, Christopher Hodges, 18, of Mentone, was arrested Wednesday on a count of torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal, which is a felony. A warrant was issued for the arrest of 20-year- old Mark Shepherd, also of Mentone, on the same charge.

Investigators believe that the pair was out driving and hit the deer. They returned to the scene and found that it was still alive. They proceeded to douse the animal in gasoline and lit it on fire.

A passerby found the deer and notified police. Officers arrived to find the wounded animal alive and still smoldering. The deer had to be put down as a result of its injuries.

I am glad these two were caught. Hopefully they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
