During their first few weeks of life deer fawns are vulnerable to predators. Many a baby deer has been eaten by coyotes, foxes, and bobcats, but I have never heard of a skunk attacking one.
Steve Bonafel post a crazy video to Facebook showing a fawn being attacked by a skunk. You can hear the fawn cry as the skunk bites it. Steve was able to rescue the fawn.
It seems a lot of people have been critical of how Steve chose to rescue the fawn because he responds to some of his critics with the following statement.
Now to explain for all the Camohats with dumb questions. Like. Why didn’t you shoot it? I Wasn’t on patrol. No gun, No time. Just checking the hay and they were to close for a clean shot. Might have shot the deer too and skunk would have sprayed us both, that would have been the end for Bambi. The way I did it, slow and careful, both came out smelling like a rose. Some say they would have grabbed or stomped the skunk. Well, I hope they get a chance soon. Haha. If that’s what you got to do to prove your manhood. You prob. haven’t proved it anywhere else. Momma deer came back that night. They lived happily ever after.
Personally, I think handled it pretty well. Good job Steve!
