Rare Big Black Cat Photographed In Van Wert County Ohio

big black cat

Call it what you will but judging from the facebook comments there is a lot of speculation to what this could be. Some those comments include black panther, mountain lion and even black lab. Judging by the length of the torso and shape of the tail I believe the black lab theory is out.

Being that we are from Ohio, stories and pictures of big black cats have intrigued us for about the last 8 years. Back then one of our own(Stephen Ziegler) had a close encounter with two black cats during the Ohio spring turkey season. Unfortunately this was years before we started recording our hunts.

Stephen was calling to a couple gobblers and had them working in hard. He creeped over a hill to get a better vantage point before the turkeys got in to close. Just as he got set up in some brush he caught some movement to his left. He saw a what appeared to be a big black cat move through the brush and under a log about ten yards away. Couldn’t make out exactly what he saw until a few seconds later a second big black cat with a long slender tail jumped up and over that same log. The cat put itself in plain view and he says there is no mistaking what he saw.

Many people don’t believe stories like this because they say “black panthers” are not in Ohio.

Now Is this picture real? Is it a black panther? Hard to tell from just a picture but given the things we have seen, it is highly possible.
