Back in November, a picture of a buck was posted to South Dakota deer hunting Facebook. At first, it was thought to be a free-range buck, but after some inconsistencies with the story, some people did more digging.
It turns out that Dugan Traversie shot into a high fence hunting preserve and killed a monster buck. He then proceeded to climb the fence and took a picture with the buck. He then removed the head and threw it over the fence and left the meat to rot.
Traversie was indicted for violations of the federal Lacey Act and larceny back in February. He faced a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Traversie initially pleaded not guilty to the charged but it seems like he was able to enter a plea deal.
According to Red Lake Nation News, sentencing was carried out this past week where Traversie was sentenced to “a year of probation, a year without hunting” and was ordered to pay $9,000 in restitution to the Timber Lake Elk Ranch.
