The Quality Deer Management Association has reported that for the second straight year more mature bucks have been killed than yearlings. This is shows a dramatic shift in the way hunters kill deer. The “If it’s brown it’s down” mentality has shifted into a more selective type harvest. These numbers show that hunters are willing to be more patient and more selective when killing deer.
What makes this even more impressive is that total buck harvests across the country have either remained the same or have been up. The only difference is the age class of the bucks that have been taken.
As hunters motivations shift towards hunting big bucks rather than shooting whatever comes by I expect the trend to continue. This should lead to a more balanced deer herd that is healthier.
